In the last few weeks, I have been benchmarking server storage in order to get a better idea what the state of the hardware is these days. There is a summary with recommendations at the end of this article. Storage technology

In the past, we had stored data on rotating disks.

Stellt sich auch raus, daß es zwei Arten von Künstlicher Intelligenz gibt, die auf für den Weltraum entwickelter Hardware leben kann: Uploads, also natürliche Gehirne, die auf einem künstlichen Compute-Substrat ausgeführt werden und AI, also von natürlichen Intelligenzen entwickelte künstliche Intelligenzen, die ihre Erbauer umgebracht haben und jetzt auf eigene Rechnung arbeiten. Stellt sich weiter raus, daß diese beiden Parteien einen interstellaren, unversöhnlichen Krieg miteinander ausfechten.

Erst mal IRC.

IRC ist kaum mal ein Protokoll. Es gibt einen einzigen RFC zum Thema IRC, rfc1459 von 1993 und das enthält nicht mal MIME, weiß nichts von UTF-8 und definiert den Zeichensatz von IRC als ASCII-Variante Geschmacksrichtung Schweden mit []{} als lustige Sonderzeichen.

Kubernetes and Complexity

On Twitter, Sandeep remarked:

The complexity and amount of code involved is staggering. I’m not sure how we can possibly justify the Kubernetes, Istio, Docker, Envoy, Prometheus, Grafana, Jaeger, Kiali, Helm stack.

What problem are we solving that were not solving 15 years ago, again? How much time and effort are being saved (by organisations smaller than Google)?

One reply was:

There is a big change currently happening in the industry, and it is what drives and enables Facebooks “pivot to privacy” at the moment. It’s less the public criticism of their methods, that’s just a justification, it’s more a broader shift.

I trolled Twitter with some Ha-Ha-Only-Serious.

Every now and then someone complains on Twitter about the use of Bashisms in Shellscripts or legacy systems that are not completely Linux-compatible. I usually troll back with the claim that anything that is not Linux is broken, and that anything that is not Bash is broken.

That is of course a troll, and I am of course at the same time totally serious.

Yes, MacOS exists and does not have a Linux userland, and that is a problem (just try to use Docker, you get a VM that runs Linux that then starts Containers). Yes, Debian ships systems with ash, and your Openwrt runs Busybox, and in both cases that is the first thing everybody changes. At least if they are going to use these systems for real, and for good reasons, too.

Wieso nennt man die Relativitätstheorie und Evolutionstheorie eigentlich immer noch ‘Theorie’?

Die Antwort muss lauten:

Weil sie das sind. Ein System von Theoremen, die ein Modell der Realität darstellen, das es erlaubt Vorhersagen über die Welt zu machen. Das Buch geht auf diesen Aspekt und noch viel mehr ausführlich ein und ist generell hilfreich um zu verstehen, was Wissenschaft ist und was nicht.

In Aus dem Journalistischen Maschinenraum diskutieren Peter Welchering und Kollegen von ihm den “Ändere Dein Paßwort Tag”. Die fehlende Frage dabei: Warum behaupten Leute, daß Ändern des Passworts unsicherer ist oder jemanden sicherer macht?

Szenarien sind wichtig, wann immer man über Security (oder Management) diskutiert.

Ohne Passwortmanager macht man sich das Leben schwerer, weil man sich Dinge merken muss. Damit das funktioniert nehmen Leute schwache Passwörter, und in Folge sinkt das Sicherheitheitsniveau. Steht so auch in der originalen Studie.
