Fietsbagger in Amsterdam

»Each year Waternet, Amsterdam’s Water Authority, fishes between 12,000 and 15,000 bicycles from the canals. The bikes were either discarded deliberately, or tossed in by hooligans.«

Tolles Spielzeug. Könntet wir für Kanal und Aasee hier sicher auch gebrauchen. Bisher geht der Tauchverein da einmal im Jahr durch den Aasee und guckt was er alles findet.

I am saddened to see this wanton killing of breeding pairs of wild fietsen and the damage to their habitat. When will humans learn that we need to get along with our environment, even if parts of it are considered a “pest” by some people.

You seem to be still stuck in the 70ies, when the common fiets (fites vulgaris) was an endangered species in the Netherlands. Since then efforts to increase their numbers have been more than successful, and they have indeed become a pest in some parts of Amsterdam, overwhelming the local tourist and pedestrian populations.
